Are you planning to travel abroad? Here are 5 important tips, including helpful resources, to consider before you go.

🧳 - Please visit the travel.state.gov website to research your destination. The travel.state.gov website includes important information regarding: a traveler’s checklist; a search engine to review any security alerts for your destination; LGBTQ+ safe zones; passport information, and so much more.

🧳 - Speaking of passports, depending on the travel destination and the travel date, and if you need a new passport or your current passport is set to expire, it may take up to 8 weeks to receive your passport—this does not include the time it takes to complete the application or the time needed for processing. Some countries like: Australia, China, Egypt, and Indonesia, to name a few, require US citizens to have a tourist visa, so consider this as well.

🧳 - Health check. Are special immunizations required for your destination? You can visit the CDC’s website at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel to research travel notices, health and safety regulations for your destination, and what to do after you return from your trip if you are not feeling well.

🧳 - If you are traveling with kids, it’s helpful to pack any necessary medications in your carry on luggage (allergy, asthma or diabetes). I also find it helpful to always travel with ibuprofen or an acetaminophen.

🧳 - Cell phone global coverage. Roaming and international fees can be rather exorbitant. Some cell phone carriers, such as Verizon for example, have a temporary international travel plan (TravelPass), that allows you to choose a wireless travel plan that best suits your needs. You can include your expected dates of travel, and upon your return to the US, this plan will automatically pause—you typically receive confirmation of this through a text message. More info can be found here: https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/travel-pass/
